Review: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time – Level 3 Drama Students

Show season has started!

We love the final term at BCE where all the students’ hard work pays off with a series of performances and exhibitions.

Our Year 1 Level 3 Drama students treated us to a deeply moving production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Their adaptation of Mark Haddon’s novel for the stage paired technical complexity and emotional nuance, and it was impressive to see our students take on such a demanding piece with confidence and imagination.

Central to the performance was our student Kasper’s portrayal of Christopher Boone, a mathematically gifted teenager navigating a world that often overwhelms him. The student in this role delivered a remarkably focused and sensitive performance, capturing Christopher’s precision, vulnerability, and occasional blunt humour. His direct address to the audience felt natural and compelling, drawing us into his thought processes as he attempted to solve the mystery at the centre of the story.

The supporting cast was equally strong, particularly in the roles of Christopher’s parents, portraying a believable sense of strain and love. It’s a situation many of our parents may recognise, illustrating the challenges of caring for a child with complex needs.

It was lovely to see our Year 2 drama students help their younger peers in a warm up before the show, getting them ready and in the zone. They also listened to last minute student wobbles and offered advice based on their own experiences.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a heartfelt and sensitive text, and we are impressed with the group’s ability to tackle the subject matter with both intelligence and empathy. It demonstrated a clear understanding of the play’s themes—communication, difference, and resilience—and we expect good grades for students’ assessments. More importantly, it’s another entry for our young people’s professional portfolios getting them ready for industry. Congratulations to all involved!

Thanks, as ever, go to our dedicated teaching staff – Nathan, Danielle, Sarah, Dorna and Marian – and particularly our technician, James.
