Level 3 Fashion Design and Garment Manufacture

Level 3 Fashion Design Duration: 2 Years

The UAL Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication are qualifications for post‑16 students looking to pursue a specialist career in the creative industries. Both qualifications provide students with the necessary industry relevant skills, knowledge and understanding to access appropriate entry level roles, training programmes or apprenticeships in the Fashion Industry, or apply for progression to related higher education courses.

These qualifications provide an opportunity for those students who have ambitions and aspirations of a career in the creative industries and arts to explore, develop and test their creativity within a qualification structure that is stimulating and demanding. Students will have the opportunity to develop transferable skills, making them versatile and employable individuals whilst learning the importance and application of ethical and sustainable design principles; as well as developing a rich contextual knowledge and understanding of their developing creative practice and specialist vocational area.

Students will have an insight into the process of designing from primary and secondary contextual research, create their own textiles, create innovative designs, and get inspiration from fashion designers and visual artists. They will also be recording design ideas and developments through 3D experimentations and observational drawing. Students will also have the opportunity to learn construction techniques or garment production and have some final outcomes for each Unit.

The UAL Level 3 Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication contains the following three mandatory units: 1 Year programme

Unit 1: The Creative Process
Unit 2: Developing Creative Practice
Unit 3: Responding to a set Brief

The UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice: Art, Design and Communication contains the following six mandatory units: 2 Year programme

Unit 1: The Creative Process
Unit 2: Developing Creative Practice
Unit 3: Responding to a set Brief
Unit 4: Researching a Specialist Industry Practice
Unit 5: Specialist Technical Skills Development
Unit 6: Specialist Creative Outcome

Aminat graduated from BCE in 2018, She moved on to study the Foundation at Central St Martins through UAL Insights. She is now studying the BA in Fashion Design and Marketing at Central St Martins. Aminat is now in her second year of the course. She is a mentor at UAL insights to help students get into CSM. Aminat also models part-time and is currently signed with Wilhelmina Models.

Ofsted Report

Big Creative Training Limited (BCT) is an independent training provider based in Walthamstow. BCT opened in 2000 and offers creative industries programmes for 16 to 19, apprenticeships, adult courses and alternative provision. BCT is rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted in all areas.

Big Creative Academy (BCA) is a 16 to 19 academy based in Walthamstow. The academy opened in September 2014 and offers study programmes for students aged 16 to 19 in subjects to prepare them primarily for further study or employment in the creative industries. BCA is rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted

Teachers have very good subject knowledge and industrial experience, as well as strong commercial links with practitioners and employers; they use these effectively to help inspire students and provide a strongly vocational context to their development.

All staff work closely with students to help them overcome any barriers to learning, to assure their health and welfare, to maintain good behaviour and a positive work ethic; as a result, students feel safe and are able to achieve their potential.
