In a recent blog post, we covered what fashion design is and how to get started as a fashion designer. Now you might be wondering how much a fashion designer makes. If so, then this blog article is for you!

What is Fashion Design?

Fashion design is the art of creating garments, accessories, and other clothing items. It is a creative field that allows people to express their creative talents and bring their ideas to life.

A fashion designer is responsible for creating and developing new clothing designs and styles, and for creating collections, developing new concepts and staying up to date on the latest fashion industry trends.

Fashion designers are in high demand in the industry. They are needed to create new designs, trends and styles for clothing and accessories. As such, an entry-level fashion designer can earn a pretty decent salary, and there isn’t technically a limit on how much you can earn…especially if you’re the next Virgil Abloh or Vivienne Westwood!

Before we get into the salary, let’s take a quick look at the skills you need.

What skills do you need to become a fashion designer?

To work in fashion design, you need to have a very specific set of skills and qualities. First of all, you need to be creative and be able to think outside the box. The most famous fashion designers have revolutionised the industry with their off-the-wall ideas and never-before-seen designs.

Designers are great at pulling ideas together from all over, inspired by art, architecture, music…and even food. Having that eye for combinations will enable you to dream up concepts and make them a reality.

There are also some technical skills you need, like good hand-eye coordination, the ability to sketch ideas on paper, and crafting skills.

But no skillset is complete without an intense passion for the fashion design industry as a whole. You need to have an understanding of the fashion industry and be able to stay up to date on the latest trends and styles to make sure yours are unique.

While there’s nothing wrong with following a trend, if you can put your own spin on it then you’re more likely to stand out as a designer.

What qualifications do you need to become a fashion designer?

To become a fashion designer, you don’t need to have a degree in fashion design or a related field. Some designers are self-starters, meaning they don’t have a formal qualification.

However, most of the best-known fashion designers have some educational background. Whether that’s in art or fashion design, being able to apply some learned fundamentals to your fashion design practice is important.

Foundational fashion design courses are a great place to start. The UK government have even rolled out a fashion design T Level in partnership with creative colleges across the country. At Big Creative Education, we offer exactly that. Take a look at the Fashion Design course page for more information.

How much money can you make as a fashion designer?

Now to the juicy bit…how much money you can make as a fashion designer! As with everything else, the amount of money that you can make depends on your experience, skill level and the type of work that you do.

If you are just starting out, you may not make much money. However, as you gain experience and become more established, your fashion designer salary will grow.

The salary for a fashion designer in the UK is between £20,000 and £44,000. Again, this totally depends on how much experience you have.

An entry-level designer with less than 1 year of experience can usually expect to earn around £19,500, while an early-career designer with up to 4 years of experience can earn, on average, approximately £25,000.

If you are able to get a job at a higher-end fashion house, you can expect to earn more. If you are able to create a successful collection, you can also expect to earn even more.

That’s why we said there’s no limit to the amount you can earn as a fashion designer. Vivienne Westwood, for example, has a net worth of $50 million!
