Cold Carnival: How Young Artists Set Hootenanny Brixton on Fire
Hootenanny Brixton proved once again why it’s one of London’s most beloved grassroots music hubs—by handing the stage over to the next generation. Cold Carnival is a music showcase organised by the events students – a collaboration showing the best talent to an audience eager to find the next new thing. Creativity is alive, loud, and refusing to be ignored.
If you’ve been to Hootenanny before, you know the atmosphere: warm lights, mismatched furniture, a stage that has seen everything from reggae legends to indie newcomers, and a crowd that comes ready to discover something new. Cold Carnival fit this setting perfectly—raw, and our young performers celebrating their talent across genres.
Cold Carnival delivered a kaleidoscope of genres:
· Soulful vocalists who turned nervous energy into soaring, emotional performances
· Rappers and spoken word artists whose confidence hit the room like an electric pulse
· Indie and alt bands experimenting with new sounds, pushing their own boundaries
· Producers and DJs blurring genres, sampling live vocals, and transforming the stage into a miniature rave
Each act brought something authentic and what stood out most was the bravery of BCE’s young people stepping into the lights, sharing work that’s still becoming, and doing it in front of a packed crowd. Moments like these matter. They give young people real stages, real audiences, and real belief in their creative futures.
For many students, it was a first gig. For others, a milestone. For all of them, it was an unforgettable night in a legendary South London venue—one that they’ll look back on as the spark that pushed them forward.
Hootenanny Brixton has always been a home for rising talent. Last night, it felt like the start of something even bigger. If Cold Carnival is a sign of what’s coming next, then the future of music is in very capable hands.
BCE are grateful to Drip Water @itsdripwater for sponsoring the event. With thanks to Jake Hight and the BCT team for organising Cold Carnival, an event we’ve now done for the fifth year running.
