At BCE, sport is about far more than winning. The Coach Carel Health & Fitness Club has been created to support learners’ mental and physical wellbeing while helping them develop the confidence, discipline, resilience and self-awareness needed to succeed both in education and in life.
What’s the health and fitness club like?
There are six different exercises each half term, combining physical activity with personal development and wellbeing. Activities have included:
- Box Exercise
- HIIT Training
- Team Bonding Games
- Sports Science workshops
- Yoga and Mindfulness
- Pass the Baton challenges
By blending fitness, education and personal growth, the club creates an environment where young people build healthy habits while having fun and connecting with others.
Different levels
The programme is built around a three-tier model to accommodate all confidence levels:
- Highly Competitive: For learners who thrive on competition and want to challenge others through sport.
- Moderately Competitive: For those who enjoy high-intensity activities and personal challenges without the pressure of winning.
- Non-Competitive: For learners focused on personal wellbeing, fitness, mindset and self-improvement.
This inclusive structure ensures that every learner can participate in a way that feels comfortable, motivating and rewarding
The Learner Voice
There’s an average of 25 young people who attend the club once a week and perhaps the strongest measure of success comes directly from the students themselves.
One learner shared:
“The Peer Konnect activity gave me the confidence to speak with people at the Black Fest event.”
Another reflected:
“I’ve made new friends, had fun, and feel better about myself. It’s not just exercise, it’s energy.”
These comments highlight how the programme is helping students build confidence, strengthen social connections and improve their overall wellbeing.
Huge thanks to all of the tutors involved in supporting the programme – Carel, Jake and Randall.
