An immersive celebration of current Black excellence and a look back to the ancestors and history that shaped it
Celebrating Black History Month is always collaborative at Big Creative Academy and driven by students. We’re very proud of our students’ response to the theme of unity putting on an immersive event throughout the college showcasing Black excellence.
Student reps from each department discussed the theme of unity with their classmates and how best to communicate their thoughts. Pride in our Roots was born, devised and curated by the students, an immersive experience for live audiences organised and hosted by the students. As one student said, “it’s about Black joy, Black pride, Black excellence” and it was an inspiring show.
The audience moved through settings throughout the college, decked out with flags containing powerful messages from both staff and students. The entire space transformed into a living, breathing tribute to Black heritage.
Drama students performed a series of scenes piece based spoken word pieces on the meaning of unity to them.
Art and Fashion students engaged deeply with the work of a Black artist or designer, drawing inspiration from their practices to inform their own final pieces. The result was a dynamic showcase of paintings, sculptures, architectural drawings, and mixed media works that reflect the rich diversity of our college and the cultural tapestry of London today.
Music students reflected on their own identity with original pieces, including one student’s dedication to her mum, as well as exploring and performing black music from across the world.
Media students presented video pieces of drama students’ spoken word narratives, sympathetically articulating the passion and integrity of their stories.
The show was not only a celebration of creative talent but also a powerful statement identity, aspiration and cultural pride. We are proud to champion the voices and experiences of young people as they navigate their creative journeys and imagine the futures they wish to shape.
